MMI UK Pre-Departure Gathering 2016

On 20 August 2016, MMI UK held their first ever Pre-Departure Gathering at Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus for the incoming first year Malaysian medical students who are about to commence their studies in the UK. It was a one-day event filled with informative talks and interactive games. This event aimed to help ease the transition of these newcomers into UK medical schools by equipping them with knowledge of what to expect once they are in the UK, and to provide networking opportunities with fellow medical freshers and seniors.3Above: MMI UK President Hui Li welcoming the freshers to the event.

The event started off with a welcome speech from the president of MMI UK, Miss Ang Hui Li. It was then followed by a talk from Mr. Syed Al-Haddad who graciously agreed to come share his journey to becoming the reputed consultant neurosurgeon that he is today and also to give advice to the incoming students with regards to studying and training in the UK. Mr. Syed was a consultant neurosurgeon at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary before returning to Malaysia to work at Sunway Medical Centre.

The participants were then divided into groups of 3 to compete in an Amazing Race-style game to encourage team-building and interactions amongst teammates. An MMI UK volunteer was assigned to each group as the team leader to guide the students throughout the session. 4 stations were set up at various locations around the university and they contained different tasks that each group would have to complete in order to score points. Each group was given 20 minutes at each station to complete the given task before moving on to the next station. The score obtained at each station was added up at the end of the session and the group with the highest total score was deemed as the winner.

All in all, the event was a success. Our participants enjoyed the event and cherished the opportunity to connect with fellow medic freshers while having a chance to interact with senior medical students to gain advice and glean from their various experiences in different medical schools.

MMI UK would like to thank everyone for their participation and wish all freshers a safe journey to the UK and the best of luck in their future endeavours!
